Great wine, wine that has personality, wine that reflects its origins, is always grown in the vineyard. We have taken this approach at Mount Edward and all that we do is based on this premise.
Our own vineyards we operate organically, we are Bio Gro certified.
Central Otago throws up its own challenges to any vigneron. We are at latitude 45 deg south, the growing season is warm and dry with cool nights. It is a short season however, with a risk of frost early and late. We actively restrict crop levels managing the vine canopy to achieve balance and uniform ripeness regardless of variety.
Our winemaking is traditional, we use natural yeasts and minimal intervention at all stages with our wines reflecting the vintage from which they came. These are hand-crafted wines, with only 6000 cases produced annually on average.
Our climate and soils are unique with the parent rock being glacially derived schist. Most of the soils having been cultivated only a few times in the 100 years before the viticulturists arrived, and some not at all.
We are fans of Central Otago’s sub regions, these all grow significant differences in wine, all of which we believe are excellent expressions of Central Otago wine. We have actively sought vineyard sites specific to some of these sub regions, vineyards we believe that will individually, and also in summation, give us the Central Otago wines that we wish to grow.
We have three estate vineyards and three grower vineyards. We are directly involved in the management of all vineyards, with our estate vineyards accredited organically and our grower vineyards having started on the same path to organic conversion.

Mount Edward's Cromwell Vineyards are the Morrison Vineyard in Lowburn, and the Muirkirk Vineyard in Bannockburn.
Mount Edward's Gibbston Vineyard is the Drumlin Vineyard on Coalpit Rd in Gibbston.
